Senior Section

After a gloriously successful 2004/5 season that as well as a fine Junior Cup final win ended with us promoted to Northumberland and Durham Division 3, we enter the new campaign with much enthusiasm.

The summer has seen a huge effort from the club to establish a firm base on which to build the future. This has resulted in the renewal of major sponsorship from local businessman Russell Fosters Durham Estates Ltd.

Investment will be made throughout the sections providing new first team kit, Tracksuits for mini and Juniors, funding for coaching and referee courses and vital to the future assistance in going into schools to promote rugby and the part Sunderland has to play in it. We are delighted with the contribution from Durham Estates and we must all maximise the opportunity this gives us.

Further sponsorship has been forthcoming with Anthony Watson Architects providing this years match balls. In addition we have received much support from the local business community who this season supporting all the positions in the first team. The second and third teams are also receiving sponsor ship form Graeme Edmundson Construction Building and Preservation.

We are grateful for all the support received but we are always on the lookout for more. Any offers of help or suggestions on ways we can raise funds will be gratefully received.

The summer’s activities have resulted in a number of major signings for the club. Tony Irwin has returned “home" from Darlington Mowden Park, Ian Dobson ahs joined us from Darlington “via” Horden. Peter Lewington, centre, ex Newcastle Development XV and Gateshead has also signed for us. We have also signed four Sunderland University players two of which play also for Darlington Mowden Park, Matthew Garforth, wing and Richard Prior, stand off. We are also delighted to see the return of players from the successful U17’s of two years ago, James Cogdon, second row, Bryan Findlay, back row and James Kyle, back. All in all things look very promising for Sunderlands’ future.
