Sunderland Rugby Football Club - History

1881

The club was founded in 1873. Initially matches were played at Holmside (1873 — 1876) before moving to Chester Road Ground for the next 11 years. In 1887 some 10 acres were purchased at Ashbrooke to allow a common ground for cricket, rugby and lawn tennis. Bowls and hockey were added later. In 1876 Sunderland was a Founder member of Durham County R.F.U.

As with all clubs we have had our ups and downs. In his history of ‘The Sunderland Cricket and Rugby Football Club’ E Watts Moses records that in the latter years of the nineteenth century and the early 1900s six Sunderland players gained international caps for England with a similar number appearing for the Barbarians.

1927

1958

Although we have not emulated those heady days since, some 120 Sunderland players have represented the county since its foundation. Sunderland have won the Senior Challenge cup 5 times; the last win having been recorded in 1959 when we defeated Durham City 6 – 3. We last appeared in the final against Stockton in 1997.
