Sunderland Rugby Football Club - Past Sunderland has been very fortunate over the years to have had administrators whose contributions to rugby have gone beyond club level to county and international level. Foremost amongst those are E Watts Moses, President of the R.F.U. FROM 1949 — 50 and A S Bean; H B Elliot and H Keenen each of whom served on the International Panel of Referees. The refereeing link continues with Alan Hughes officiating in the Zurich Premiership. The club has also provided seven presidents of the County Union, the last being Robin Auld in 1984-85. Indeed, during Robin’s office Sunderland’s links with the County were very strong. Charlie Bentley was County Captain, David Boyd was Chairman of Selectors and Ken Witherington was County Coach. No wonder they were called the Sunderland Mafia! Ken is still fully involved as Chairman of the Durham Schools R.F.U.
