Under 14 Match Reports

Recent Match Reports for Sunderland Under 14s.

Date: 4 January 2009
Location: Hartlepool Rovers

Squad: Squad: Evans, McIntyre, Wilson, Harrison, Butler, Hanson, Fox, Suddick, Tilley, Bradley, White, Donnelly, Miller, Jenner, Camm, Crawford, Summer.

Men of the match: forwards — Evans: backs - Crawford

Sunderland under 14’s squad travelled to Hartlepool Rovers for their first game of the New Year, still searching for their first victory. Rovers, as with the Sunderland boys, had not played a competitive match for several weeks, due to the weather.

Sunderland had some key players returning to the squad after lengthy absences, and hoped they would make the difference to the overall performance. Indeed, the Ashbrooke side started the stronger, pressing back the home side. But Rovers, with a strong pack trying to hold play up front and prevent the visitors’ backs running, came back into it. Eventually, however, the visitors did get the chance to run the ball down their line, and came close through Camm and Crawford on either wing. The new centre partnership of Donnelly and Miller was beginning to play, well fed from Bradley and White at scrum half and stand-off respectively. Their forwards were also beginning to win ball in the pack. This eventually broke to Miller who took his chance to run from the centre across the line for the first score. White converted well to give the visitors a 7 — 0 half time lead.

Sunderland scored again early in the second half to give themselves a cushion. The move involved the centres and Summer, replacement winger, in a lovely looped run to feed Donnelly, who charged over.

Rovers did not lie down, however, and after a period of strong pressure, in which the Sunderland lads had to defend solidly for a protracted period, they forced themselves across the line between the posts, and converted to bring the score back to 12 — 7.

Donnelly took his second chance with a long, powerful run from the centre to take the score to 17. White obliged with a second conversion. Sunderland had to defend some fierce work by the Rovers forwards. Tackling by the Ashbrooke boys was sound, with good assistance from the pack, ably led by Evans. Sunderland held on for a satisfying 19 -7 victory against their old friends in a challenging match fought in great spirit.

Date: 14 Septmember 2008
Location: Ryton (H)

Squad: Evans (capt); Harry; Suddick; Wilson; Butler; Harrison; Donnelly; Devlin; Ward; Sopp; Camm; Tye; Summer; Fairweather

Man of the Match: Donnelly (forward) and Camm (back)

Sunderland kicked off the new season with a home fixture against Ryton. Sunderland were missing a few players but welcomed a new hooker, Harry.

Ryton provided stiff opposition that in the end proved too strong for the home side, scoring two quick tries within minutes. The new lad for Sunderland left the field early in the game with injury, reducing the home side to 14 men for the remainder of the game. As Ryton had a strong and well organised pack, the one man deficit counted.

Ryton were strong in the rucks, mauls and scrums. When they got the ball to the backs they were also well organised.

Sunderlandbattled well, with brave attempts to get in the faces of the opposition and some quick tackling from the back row of the pack. They defended well till half time to keep the deficit down to three tries, the third score for Ryton being a clever dummy switch.

Sunderland battled from the restart to force the play into the Ryton 22. Good work from the Sunderland pack allowed Miller to come in for a neat pick up and score.

Ryton came back with two more scores. To their credit, the Sunderland boys, always on the back foot, kept to the task to the last, but weren’t strong enough on the day.
